Midnight Feast Ideas for a Sleepover

Glitterball Disco teepee sleepover party with pink trays and fairy lights, ready for a midnight feast in Surrey

Ask any child what the best part of a sleepover is and there's a good chance they'll whisper two words at you. The midnight feast. It's the moment that makes a night with friends feel like something out of a storybook, all torchlight and giggles and crinkly wrappers under the covers.

The trouble is that a feast of pure sweets at actual midnight tends to end one of two ways. Either nobody sleeps at all or somebody feels poorly by two in the morning. After setting up more slumber parties than I can count, I've learnt that you can keep every bit of the magic while losing the sugar crash. Here's how I'd do it.

What do you put in a midnight feast?

I think of a good feast as having four corners. Something sweet, something savoury, something crunchy and something to drink. If every child has a little of each, the sugar is balanced out by food that actually fills them up, which means calmer tummies and calmer children.

Portion size matters more than what's on the menu. A small box or paper bag per child works far better than one big bowl in the middle, because nobody ends up eating twice their share while the shyest guest gets the crumbs. If you like a plan, The Sleepover Pack has a midnight feast planner and a menu card for the table, so everyone can see what's coming.

What time should a midnight feast actually be?

Here's my secret: it shouldn't be anywhere near midnight. I always suggest serving the feast at around half past seven or eight, before the film rather than after it, so there's time for the excitement to settle before lights out. Children don't mind in the slightest, especially if you make a big show of announcing that midnight has arrived early tonight.

For older children who are desperate for the real thing, save one tiny treat for later. A single biscuit or a square of chocolate eaten by torchlight at bedtime feels wonderfully daring without keeping anyone awake.

Sweet treats that won't keep them up all night

You don't need to banish sweets, just pair them with something a little gentler. Strawberries or halved grapes with a little pot of chocolate to dip them in feel indulgent but are mostly fruit. Homemade flapjack squares, mini muffins and shortbread fingers are lovely too, because they have more to them than a handful of jelly sweets.

Frozen yoghurt bark is a favourite with the girls I meet, as it looks so pretty broken into shards with berries and sprinkles on top. If you do want a pick and mix moment, offer a small scoop each rather than an open bag. For drinks, keep cola and energy drinks right off the list because of the caffeine. Water, milk or a weak squash in a cup with their name on it is perfect.

Savoury bites and crunchy things

This is the corner that does the real work. Popcorn is my first choice every time, served in little paper cones so it feels like the cinema. Cheese straws, breadsticks with a pot of hummus, pretzels, cheese cubes and mini crackers all go down well with a hungry group.

Tiny sandwiches cut into stars or hearts with a cookie cutter disappear in seconds, which always surprises parents who think nobody wants a sandwich at a party. Cucumber and carrot sticks might be ignored by half the room, but they're there for the children who quietly love them.

How do you make a midnight feast feel magical?

Presentation is everything here. Pack each child their own feast in a paper bag or a little box with their name on the front, then hide them all in a basket for the grand reveal. Turn the big lights off, hand out torches and let them eat on their beds like the children in every boarding school story they've ever read.

A secret knock or a password to open the basket costs nothing yet adds so much to the fun. If you'd rather it was done for you, our VIP and Ultimate add ons include a midnight snack box waiting on every child's tray, so the feast is ready the moment they find their teepee.

For children aged 10 to 14, a feast is the perfect setting for a mystery. Our printable Midnight Cake Mystery game has a cake vanishing from the pantry with your guests playing the suspects, solving three rounds of clues to find the thief. Bring out a real cake once the culprit is caught and you'll have the best ending to a feast I know.

What about allergies and fussy eaters?

Ask every family about allergies and dietary needs when you send the invitations, not on the night. The guest info cards in The Sleepover Pack make this easy, with space for allergies, contacts and bedtime needs. Going completely nut free is usually the simplest way to keep everyone safe, as well as checking the labels on anything shop bought.

I still teach, with over twelve years in primary classrooms specialising in SEN, so I know how much a familiar food can mean to a child who finds new places a little overwhelming. It's always worth asking parents whether there's a favourite snack you could add to their child's bag. A packet of their usual crackers can be the thing that helps a nervous guest relax into the evening.
