Not every sleepover needs a styling team. Some of my favourite nights with Mila and Beau have been a few friends, a pile of duvets on the lounge floor and a pizza that got slightly burnt round the edges. What made those nights feel special was never the money spent. It was the little touches that told every child someone had thought about them.
So if you are hosting this one yourself, here is how I would do it. I have also turned the things we use at every teepee slumber party into printables you can download tonight, which you will find dotted through this post.
Can a sleepover at home still feel special?
It absolutely can, because it usually comes down to three things. Children want to feel expected, they want to know what is happening next and they want something to take home. Get those right and a normal living room becomes the best party of the year. Get them wrong and even the fanciest setup can tip into chaos by nine o'clock.
Start with an invitation they will want to keep
The invitation is the first moment of excitement, so it is worth making it feel like a proper event. Ours are painted in soft watercolour in all ten of our themes, from Boho Chic and Mermaid Lagoon to Match Day Magic and Elf Academy. You can change every word for free in Canva, then print them or send them straight to the class WhatsApp group. Our editable sleepover invitations are £3 each.
Alongside the invitation, I always send a short note for the grown ups. Pickup time, what to pack and a gentle question about allergies or bedtime needs saves a dozen messages later in the week.
Give the night a plan children can see
This is the teacher in me talking. In over twelve years of teaching, much of it specialising in SEN, the single most calming thing I have found is showing children what comes next. A simple visual timetable on the wall (games, food, film, pyjamas, lights out) answers the question "what are we doing now?" before anyone has to ask it fifteen times.
It helps the grown up just as much. When the plan says film at half seven, you are no longer negotiating, you are simply following the plan. Pair it with a sensible lights out time for their age and the whole evening has a lovely calm shape.
What do you need for a sleepover at home?
Far less than the internet would have you believe. These are the small details that make the biggest difference:
A name card on every bed: it settles the "where am I sleeping?" squabble before it starts, which is worth its weight in gold.
A welcome sign on the front door: the first thing guests see when they arrive with their sleeping bags, so the party starts on the doorstep.
Cinema tickets for film night: hand them out at the door of the lounge with a snack bar menu, because tickets turn a film into an occasion.
Pizza order slips: let them tick their own toppings, which keeps fussy eaters happy and makes tea feel like a restaurant.
Award certificates in the morning: First to fall asleep, Pillow fort architect, Best giggle. Every child goes home with one, so nobody feels left out.
Every one of those is inside The Sleepover Pack, 48 fillable pages for £5, along with a six week countdown, a midnight feast planner and eight games. If you would love everything to match, the Sleepover Party Kit has invitations, signs, thank you cards and party bag tags in all ten themes.
Have a few games up your sleeve
You do not need many. Three before food, one after and something quiet once pyjamas are on is plenty for most groups. Bingo is my secret weapon because it works loud before tea or whispered in sleeping bags at the end of the night. Our printable sleepover games start at £3, with every question kind and every dare gentle, so nobody is left feeling singled out. Everything is ready to print at home on A4, so you could be playing tonight.
And if you would rather we did it all
Some birthdays call for the full magic. Our teepee sleepover hire brings fully styled teepees, bedding, fairy lights and a breakfast tray for every child to homes across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, plus parts of Berkshire, Kent and South London, from £45 per teepee. We set everything up, then come back in the morning to pack it all away. Our 2026 dates are now fully booked, so I am taking bookings for 2027. Have a browse of our sleepover themes to see what your child would choose.
