Ten Things to Know Before Booking a Teepee Sleepover Party
Booking a teepee sleepover party for your child is one of those genuinely exciting decisions. But there are a few things that will make the whole experience go even more smoothly. Here is everything I wish every parent knew before the big night.
Hi, I’m Leigh, founder of Sweet Dreams Events and a primary school teacher of over 16 years. I have set up sleepover teepee parties for families across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, and I can honestly say the families who enjoy it most are always the ones who felt fully informed before we started. So here are my ten honest tips from someone who has seen it all.
1. You need more floor space than you think
Each teepee needs approximately 1.2 metres wide by 1.2 metres deep of clear floor space — the teepee itself stands 130cm tall. The mattress extends to 180cm, so you will need clear floor space of approximately 185cm per child from the front of the mattress to the wall or next teepee. For a slumber party of six children, you are looking at clearing a floor area of roughly 4 metres by 3.5 metres. A medium-sized living room is usually perfect, but it is worth measuring before you confirm your numbers.
The most common challenge on setup day is furniture that has not been moved yet. I always ask families to clear the space before I arrive. It means more time for the fun parts and a much smoother setup for everyone.
2. The bedding is always freshly laundered
This is the question I get asked most often, and the answer is always yes. Every fitted sheet, duvet, duvet cover and pillowcase across all our teepee tents for sleepovers is professionally laundered between every single booking. I use antibacterial laundry detergent, and everything is carefully inspected before it is packed into the car.
If any child has a specific allergy to detergents or fabric types, please let me know at the time of booking. I will use appropriate alternatives for their bedding. Your child's comfort comes first, always.
3. Setup takes longer than you would expect and that is a good thing
A full Sweet Dreams Events sleepover teepee hire setup takes between 90 minutes and two hours, depending on the number of teepees and the theme. I always agree a setup time in advance, usually two to three hours before guests arrive, so there is no rushing and every detail looks exactly right before the first child walks through the door.
My advice is to plan to be home but not in the room. The setup comes together as a whole picture, and it is far more magical when children see it finished for the first time, rather than watching it being built piece by piece.
4. You genuinely do not need to prepare anything
Everything is provided. Teepees, mattresses, bedding, props, fairy lights, lanterns, bunting and themed breakfast trays. There is nothing for you to buy, source or set up. That is the whole point of what I do.
The only things I ask of families are to clear the floor space before I arrive and to have a power socket nearby. Everything else is entirely down to me.
5. Book as early as you possibly can
Weekend dates for teepee party hire book up very quickly, especially during school holiday periods. Half-term weekends often fill up six to eight weeks in advance. Summer dates from mid-July onwards are my busiest time of year, and I regularly have to turn families away because their preferred date is already taken.
Book the moment you have a date in mind, even if the party is months away. A 25% deposit secures the date, and the balance is not due until 14 days before the party. There is no benefit to waiting and a real risk to your preferred date if you do.
6. Themes can absolutely be mixed
If three guests want Mermaid Lagoon and three want Minecraft Sleepover, that is completely fine. I can style each teepee differently within the same slumber party setup, so every child gets exactly the theme they chose. Just let me know at the time of booking so I can plan accordingly.
And if your child has a dream theme that is not in my current collection, please ask. I genuinely love a bespoke request and will always do my best to source the right props and bring it to life. Some of my favourite ever setups have come from themes I had never tried before.
7. The morning collection is the easiest part for you
I come back the morning after, usually between 9am and 11am, as agreed in advance, and pack everything away. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and you do not need to be involved at all. Just leave me access to the room and somewhere to load from.
Parents tell me regularly that the morning collection is their favourite part of the whole teepee sleepover party experience. You wake up, have a coffee, and I quietly make everything disappear. No cleaning, no disassembly, no stress. Just happy children and happy memories.
8. Tell me about allergies and pets before the day
If any of the guests have allergies to detergents, fabrics or any food items in add-on snack packages, please let me know at the point of booking. I can adapt bedding materials and make sure everything on the breakfast trays is right for every child.
Pets are also worth mentioning. I love animals, but some of my fabrics and props used across our teepees for slumber parties can be affected by cat and dog hair. If you have pets at home, I can give you specific guidance about keeping them out of the party room during the hire period.
9. What to do if a child gets homesick
It happens, and it is completely normal, especially for younger children at their first-ever sleepover birthday party. Have a quiet plan in place before the party begins. Know which parents are contactable through the night and have a calm, gentle response ready if someone gets upset.
The slumber party tents actually help with this more than you might expect. Children having their own individual space with their own name board tends to make them feel secure and settled rather than overwhelmed. For very young children, a smaller guest list of one or two close friends is often the better first sleepover option.
10. It will be more magical than you are expecting
I know every business says something like this, but I genuinely mean it. The moment a child walks into a room filled with glowing teepee tents for sleepovers, fairy lights and a beautifully styled setup waiting just for them, something special happens. It never gets old, no matter how many setups I do.
Parents messaged me the morning after to say they did not expect it to be quite so wonderful. That message is my favourite part of this job. If you are on the fence about booking a teepee slumber party, please do not be. Your child will talk about it for years.
